Everything parents want to know about sports at Bloomingdale International School.
At BIS, sports are not a break from learning — they are part of learning. Sports form a core pillar of holistic development, sitting alongside academics, arts, and well-being rather than being treated as a peripheral activity. The school's approach prioritises long-term athlete development, fitness, discipline, confidence building, and a genuine love for physical activity. Performance and winning matter, but they follow naturally from getting the fundamentals right — proper coaching, safe training, and a healthy relationship with sport.
BIS offers a wide range of sports including Football, Basketball, Tennis, Table Tennis, Swimming, Squash, Volleyball, Cricket, Badminton, and Gymnastics. Most programmes are run in partnership with internationally and nationally recognised academies — ensuring students receive structured, high-quality coaching rather than informal supervision. Children up to Grade 3 are introduced to all sports, while students from Grade 4 onwards choose the sport they wish to pursue, giving everyone the chance to discover what they love before committing.
All BIS sports coaches are experienced professionals in their respective disciplines. They are trained and certified through nationally accredited institutions and recognised by national sports federations. Coaches are trained in standardised teaching methods, age-appropriate practice design, and safety and injury prevention protocols. BIS specifically selects coaches who prioritise long-term athlete development and the well-being of each student over short-term competitive results — ensuring every child is coached safely and effectively.
BIS runs two tiers of sports engagement. Free Sports Clubs run from 3:40 PM to 4:30 PM and are open to all students — designed for participation, exploration, and enjoyment with no selection barrier. Advanced and Performance Clubs run from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM for students pursuing sport seriously, offering high-performance training, professional academy coaching, and competitive preparation. Every student has access to the Free Sports Club, while the Advanced Club is for those ready to commit at a higher level.
Every BIS student's physical development is tracked through periodic health and fitness reports. These reports cover growth parameters, stamina and cardiovascular fitness, coordination and agility, strength development, and overall physical well-being. Coaches use this data to personalise each student's training programme, ensure their safety, prevent injuries, and make evidence-based decisions about their progression. This structured monitoring means no child is over-trained, under-trained, or left behind.
BIS runs its football programme in partnership with LaLiga Football Schools — the official global youth development initiative of Spain's La Liga. Students are trained using Spanish coaching methodologies specially designed by LaLiga's Global Technical Director and adapted for Indian students. Training focuses on technical skill, tactical understanding, and the values of discipline and teamwork that define elite football. This partnership gives BIS students access to the same developmental framework used by one of the world's top football leagues.
The basketball programme at BIS is delivered through NBA Basketball Schools — the NBA's official global network of youth development programmes, open to male and female players aged 6 to 18. Training is based on "the NBA-Way" of developing basketball talent, which combines explosive athletic development with the NBA's core values of integrity, teamwork, respect, and innovation. Students receive structured coaching that develops both their game and their character, building the habits of elite athletes from an early age.
BIS's swimming programme is managed by White Shark Swimming Academy, led by international swimmers who have represented India at international events. This means students are coached by athletes who have competed at the highest levels and understand what it takes to develop technically sound, confident swimmers. The academy caters to all ability levels — from beginners learning water safety and basic strokes to competitive swimmers training for inter-school and state-level competition.
Sports at BIS are directly integrated into the IB framework at every level. Physical and Health Education is a core subject group in both the PYP and MYP curricula. For Diploma Programme students, physical activity is a compulsory component of CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) — meaning sustained sporting engagement is a graduation requirement, not optional. Sports also feature in periodic health and fitness assessments that form part of each student's holistic development record, recognised by universities alongside academic achievements.
Yes. BIS students who excel in sports are recognised and supported to compete at inter-school, state-level, and national-level competitions. The school's partnerships with professional academies provide structured competitive pathways for talented students. Sports achievers are celebrated within the school community and supported with coaching, preparation time, and logistics for external competitions. Medals, awards, and competitive honours are actively built into a student's profile — contributing meaningfully to university applications and personal development.
